Precursor, I'm writing this with my phone at a stealership while my "covered" oil gets changed. So grammar might be worse than normal!
Egos are a necessary concept in capitalism, you must have a reasonable amount of Ego in order to believe in yourself to promote your services in trade for dollars. If we had no egos you would be quick to admitting there are plenty of people that can do exactly what you do better, faster, cheaper, fill in the blank. However our ego gives us the sales pitch necessary to grow, to chalange and to believe in ourselves that we indeed are the best with a fill in the blank with a qualifier. I had a coworker just the other day say that she is the best Rep the company has to offer, yet quantitatively I had statistics that proved her incorrect. Her response was simple and egotistical, an excuse followed by a qualifier. She believed due to ego that she indeed is the best Rep, and by her qualifiying statement because it was a immeasurable statement she is correct. Thus she tells her clients she's the best rep in the country and they should be so lucky to have her. They believe it thus its true. Her ego, has created the best rep in the country! There's nothing wrong with that concept, she does not hurt anyone and actually makes her clients feel great that they GET her! Win win! Egos are good!
Now the counter argument, egos get in the way. For an employee, sometimes egos can benefit, as the above example shows. On the contrary, managers or owners egos can easily get in the way. If you are in the position to receive compensation based on others work or production even if your ego wants to take the credit, don't, let the credit be in productivity! Let your bank account stroke your ego! Employees need to have a Sence of worth or title, you as a manager need to suck it up give credit, even if it isn't due, and reap the benefits of a larger bank account. As an owner your ego needs to be fed by the dollars, satisfaction of the end product by your clients and when appropriate your pitch to clients if you pitch directly to the end client. If someone gets you the business, and it's your business, yet they take credit. Who gets paid?! Don't muddy the waters with "credit" when it's your bank account and your clients that are satisfied. Don't let your ego get in the way of your goals!
